Ambubachi Mela: The Earth's Menstruation

The temple is famous for the Ambubachi Mela, an annual festival celebrating the earth's fertility. It is believed that during the monsoon month of Ahaar, the Goddess undergoes her annual menstrual cycle. The temple remains closed for three days, and when it reopens, the waters of the Brahmaputra near the hill are said to turn red. This celebration signifies that menstruation is not a taboo, but a sacred part of the cycle of creation.

The Nilachal Style

The temple features a unique beehive-shaped dome, a hallmark of the Nilachal style of architecture developed by the Ahom and Koch dynasties. Inside the Garbhagriha, there is no idol; instead, the Goddess is worshipped in the form of a natural fissure in a rock, through which a perennial spring flows.
