Sharada Mataji Temple

Goddess Sharada (Saraswati) 📍 Kishanganga Valley, Jammu & Kashmir

The legendary seat of wisdom where the Divine resides as the fountainhead of all letters and learning.

The Global Hub of Sharada Peeth

Before the rise of modern institutions, **Sharada Peeth** was one of the foremost universities of the Himalayas, rivaling the centers at Nalanda and Taxila. It was a pilgrimage site for scholars, philosophers, and grammarians from across the world. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Sharada, the Kashmiri manifestation of Saraswati, and it gave the region its ancient name: *Sharada Desha* (The Land of Sharada).

The Mother of the Sharada Script

This sacred site was the birthplace of the **Sharada script**, the original writing system of Kashmir used to document thousands of Sanskrit manuscripts. Great masters like Adi Shankara and Ramanujacharya are recorded as having traveled to the Peeth to access its legendary library and engage in philosophical debates. It is also recognized as one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas, where the right hand of Sati is believed to have fallen—symbolic of the hand used for writing and knowledge.

Stone and Spirit

Built primarily from red sandstone and local granite, the temple’s ruins reveal a unique northern entrance and a massive enclosure wall. Despite its remote location in the Kishanganga valley and the challenges of the last century, it remains the ultimate spiritual anchor for the Kashmiri Pandit community. The recent reconstruction of a dedicated shrine and center near the LoC ensures that the legacy of Sharada—the light of wisdom—continues to burn bright for future generations.

Significance

Considered the primary seat of the Goddess of Learning in North Bharat.

Access

The historic ruins are located in Shardi; new shrines are accessible in Teetwal, Kashmir.

Spirituality

Devotees recite the Sharada Stotram to invoke the blessings of the Divine Mother for clarity of thought.
