The Protector of the Valley

The Sharika Devi Temple, also known as the Chakreshwari Temple, is perched on the western slopes of Hari Parbat Hill in Srinagar. According to Kashmiri legend, the valley was once terrorized by a water demon named Jalodbhava. In response to the prayers of the sages, the Goddess took the form of a Haer (Myna bird) and dropped a small pebble onto the demon. This pebble grew miraculously into the massive hill of Hari Parbat, trapping the demon beneath it and restoring peace to the land.

The Swayambhu Sri Chakra

Unlike most temples, the primary focus of devotion here is not a statue, but a Swayambhu Sri Chakra—a naturally occurring, mystical geometric pattern etched into a large vertical rock face (Shila). Covered in layers of vermilion (sindoor), this Sri Chakra is revered as the Maha Yantra, representing the cosmic play of creation and absorption. The Goddess is worshipped as Tripurasundari, the 18-armed mother who governs the spiritual energy of the city.

A Symbol of Syncretism

The temple structure reflects traditional Kashmiri wooden architecture, with intricate carvings and vibrant paintings that have been meticulously maintained by the community. Hari Parbat itself is a unique spiritual site; it houses the Sharika Devi shrine, the historic fort of Akbar, the Makhdoom Sahib shrine, and the Gurdwara Chatti Patshahi, standing as a testament to the region's diverse and intertwined heritage.
